The Chiefs have put on a 13-try masterclass to defeat Moana Pasifika 85 – 7 at FMG Stadium in Waikato.
The table-toppers came out firing with their high-tempo attack. They dominated in set piece and possession, which saw them create an early opportunity for Shaun Stevenson to score their first try.
The hosts impressed with razzle dazzle in the backline and power in the forwards which disrupted Moana’s flow for most of the game.
Moana Pasifika tried to respond but they couldn’t stop the pace and connection of their opponents. It was tough to contain with two yellow cards as well in the first half.
The penalties against them compiled and Damian McKenzie continued to show his class. McKenzie was rewarded for his incredible playmaking with his own try to end the first half, giving his team a 31-0 lead.
The Chiefs came into the second half with the same discipline and determination.
A front row change and some fresh legs proved beneficial for Moana Pasifika early in the second half, as they began to find momentum.
An incredible carry by Abraham Pole led to Moana’s first try under the posts scored by Ardie Savea in the 48th minute.
Moana chipped away trying to put phases together but the Chiefs counter ruck was at its best.
The tries racked up for the Chiefs as they commanded the game both attack on and defence.
Playoff hopes are still alive for Moana Pasifika as they prepare for a must-win match against the Hurricanes in Wellington next Saturday.
