On January 15, 2022, the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai volcano erupted, spewing ash, steam and gas and triggered a tsunami. This caused significant and widespread devastation to the Kingdom of Tonga just 65 kilometres away.

Three-months later, Tonga still fights to rebuild and rebound. The eruption was a one-off event, but the disaster exposed many of the environmental vulnerabilities all island nations face amidst the looming threat of climate change.

#TongaStrong is a joint-fundraising campaign led by Moana Pasifika and EarthX to generate revenue to help meet the material needs of the Tongan people as they rebuild their communities — as well as support efforts to rebuild a sustainable and equitable infrastructure that will withstand future environmental challenges and serve as a model for the world.
