Moana Pasifika 7s Cup marks biggest event with first international team

On Saturday 13 December, Moana Pasifika hosted their third 7s Cup tournament at the Otahuhu College Memorial Grounds.

Two teams travelled all the way from Tahiti to participate in Moana Pasifika’s biggest community event, marking the first time for them to travel outside of their homeland.

Other participants included teams representing Samoa, Tonga, Fiji Niue and the Cook Islands representing the Under 18 or Under 16 age groups. It was also the first time that the U14 age groups were invited to compete.

Every year the tournament has become bigger and more competitive with the Moana 7s Cup solidifying itself as a top grassroots competition.

Despite the Tahitian sides not winning any games, it was a great experience for them to go up against top competition and develop their skills. They were fierce and gave it their all in every match.

Away from the field there were also fun activities and games run by Moana Pasifika players. Some players also got involved with water duties throughout the day.

Moana Pasifika’s community teams look forward to hosting next year’s tournament with a vision of having more international teams getting involved.
