Moana Pasifika kicked off an exciting week in Rotorua, connecting with local RSE workers, children in hospital, youth justice facility and cultural community groups ahead of the team’s match against the Chiefs at Rotorua International Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
On Thursday Moana Pasifika players Julian Savea, Lolani Faleiva, Penieli Poasa and Pathways Manager Francis Stowers hosted a skills and drills session with the Rotorua Boys High School’s First XV.
It began with beautiful singing and a mihi whakatau (welcome speech) from the school before they took the field. The session was also open to the public so young children could join in afterwards.
It was a great opportunity to pass on their expertise before the Rotorua Boys First XV’s head to Japan for the Sanix World Rugby Youth Tournament.
Later in the day Savea, Faleiva and Poasa visited the Te Maioha o Parekarangi Youth Justice Residence. They spent time there, sharing their career and life experiences. The youth got a chance to ask questions and get an insight to what it’s like being a professional athlete.

Then on Thursday evening the local Tongan, Fijian and Cook Island communities hosted Moana Pasifika staff and players (Savea, Faleiva and Poasa) for an entertaining evening of cultural performances and connection.
Held at the Cook Islands Community House, there was also a Kava ceremony and a chance for players to join in the dancing and festivities.
On Friday, Moana Pasifika continued their engagements in the community with a visit to the Rotorua Hospital Children’s Ward and the Seasonal Workers of Apata Group. These workers come from many nations across the Pacific Islands to assist New Zealand’s horticulture and viticulture industries.
They sacrifice leaving their families back home in the islands to provide for them, which resonates with Moana Pasifika.

Every community encounter has inspired and moved Moana Pasifika, opening their eyes to the many different challenges and experiences of people in the region.
Moana Pasifika wanted to brighten their day and give back to a community who are so deserving. They’re looking forward to seeing them at the game on Saturday.
