Moana Pasifika is proud to present the Teine Toa under 15 7’s tournament to be held this month. The tournament is the first of many Moana Pasifika community-based sports festivals and is focussed on encouraging young girls to participate in physical activity.

Enhancing Pasifika health and well-being by encouraging the youth to participate in sports and physical activity is central to Moana Pasifika’s vision.

Six schools from around Auckland have been invited to participate, with a further two composite Harbour Pasifika teams joining the event to have eight teams. The tournament is non-competitive, with teams playing social matches in a round robin format.

The festival of rugby, to be held on Saturday 26 November, will take place at Mount Smart Stadium’s number four field which is the home to the Moana Pasifika headquarters (12 Maurice Road).

Moana Pasifika Community Manager Leeson Ah Mau is thrilled to have established a tournament targeted at female participants. “This is a great opportunity to not only support young women through sports, but it is also about bringing our community together and highlighting the benefits of being active.”

“We are excited to unravel and showcase the incredible talent our young pacific women harbour. This tournament is about promoting participation and for some of these girls, it will be their first-time playing rugby sevens,” says Ah Mau.

Moana Pasifika is working alongside Sport New Zealand to combat the challenges young girls face when participating in sport through their initiative know as #itsmymove.

The event will provide a perfect opportunity for a fun-filled family outing with tabloid games for children, spot prizes and food trucks. Giveaways include a Moana Pasifika jersey as well as drink bottles, sweat towels and sun visors.

Moana Pasifika hopes that through this initiative, young girls will be inspired to participate in rugby in the long-term.
