Outside Back
Solomon Alaimalo was born in Auckland and raised in Christchurch, attending St Bede’s College. His younger brother Charles played rugby for Southland making 55 appearances between 2019-2023, and played for the Zebre Rugby Club in Italy.
Alaimalo is known for his athletic and explosive game, combining strength, pace and spectacular aerial skills to make him a threat at either wing or fullback. He made his debut for Northland Taniwha in 2016 and quickly became a pivotal figure, starting all 10 of their championship games and scoring two tries. Chiefs coaches were impressed and signed him for the 2017 Super Rugby season. A breakout year saw Alaimalo start for the Chiefs in their match against the British and Irish Lions, and named Chiefs rookie of the year.
He continued his hot form in the 2017 Mitre 10 Cup, helping Northland to a Championship semi-final. Alaimalo played every single minute for the Taniwha in 2017 and ranked in the top five of the competition in four categories: carries (116), defenders beaten (44), metres (827) and offloads (21).
In 2018, Alaimalo signed a three year deal with the Chiefs and moved to the Tasman Mako in NPC. The speedster’s incredible form in his first two seasons in Super Rugby had him in All Blacks discussions. He was also nominated for the Super Rugby player of the year at the New Zealand Rugby awards in 2018. Alaimalo has shown resilience throughout his career, overcome adversity which included a string of injuries early in his career. This included a season-ending shoulder injury during the 2020 season.
In November 2020, Alaimalo signed a three-year-deal with the Highlanders, cutting his deal with the Chiefs short by a season. He made 47 appearances for the Chiefs and scored a total of 21 tries.
Alaimalo started at fullback in the Highlanders season opener against the Crusaders in February 2021. That was the only game he played for the Highlanders before taking a mental health break. In June of 2021, Alaimalo publicly shared his battle with anxiety and depression which he had experienced growing up and had gotten worse once he joined professional rugby. Him sharing his personal struggles, encouraged others to open up and garnered support from other athletes. Alaimalo credits his fiancée Savannah for supporting him through his mental health journey.
Alaimalo returned to the field with the Southland Stags in their 2021 NPC campaign, where he played alongside brother Charles. He re-joined the Chiefs as a replacement player in pre-season at the end of 2022. In 2023, he moved to Canterbury for the NPC season. In December 2023, Alaimalo signed with the Wests Tigers in the NRL. He played eight games for the Tigers during the 2024 season and scored two tries.
In October 2024, Alaimalo signed with Moana Pasifika for the 2025 Super Rugby Pacific season, bringing his leadership and attacking prowess to the the young backline. He played in eight games at wing and scored one try in Moana Pasifika’s second game of the season against the Queensland Reds in Brisbane.
